Konami Aims for Annual Silent Hill Releases, Producer Says

Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamoto says Konami wants to release a new game in the horror franchise every year, with several unannounced projects in development.

Konami is pushing for annual releases of new Silent Hill games, according to series producer Motoi Okamoto, who says the company is seeking fresh takes on the horror franchise to keep it from going stale. In an interview with Gamesradar at Gamescom, Okamoto explained that the publisher wants to avoid exhausting the narrative possibilities of the series' familiar American setting, which he said could also cause fatigue among players.

"Our aim is to, hopefully, have an annual release of new games," Okamoto told the outlet. "If we stay laser-focused on the same American setting, that would exhaust [narrative] possibilities, and also potentially cause fatigue for the playerbase." He also confirmed that multiple unannounced Silent Hill projects are currently in development, though he declined to provide specifics. "There are still many projects that are still [in] the works and very unannounced titles," he said. "We would like to let players know that we have more experiences coming up, and many types of games that, we believe, will be able to provide positive kinds of surprises for players waiting for this for the series."

Okamoto's comments align with statements made by Konami president Hideki Hayakawa, who said the company is actively invested in reinvigorating its most iconic franchises. In an interview with Nikkei Gaming, Hayakawa specifically mentioned Silent Hill, Metal Gear, and Castlevania as properties the company is working to reboot, a term he used to describe releasing new games rather than remaking old ones. "Our company has been making games for more than 50 years, and we hold several IPs that are beloved globally by many fans," he said. "We concluded that rebooting these properties would be an effective way to make the most of them."

Hayakawa also outlined Konami's broader strategy of releasing games across multiple platforms rather than focusing on a single franchise. "Our basic philosophy is that as long as there are customers for a given game, we will release it across multiple devices," he explained. "Rather than focusing intensely on just one specific IP, we've built a structure that allows us to push forward on multiple IPs simultaneously with equal energy."

Silent Hill has seen a resurgence with the release of the Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f, the latter of which represents a notable departure from the series' traditional American setting in favor of 1960s Japan. That shift appears to align with Konami's stated goal of exploring new narrative territory. The upcoming Silent Hill: Townfall is scheduled for release on September 22, and the company has also unveiled a cast reveal trailer for the title.

The push for annual releases comes as Konami looks to capitalize on renewed interest in its horror franchise, which has historically been one of the most influential in the genre. With multiple projects reportedly in the pipeline, the publisher appears committed to maintaining a steady stream of Silent Hill content for fans in the coming years.
