Footage From Avalanche Studios' Canceled Iron Man Game Leaks Online
Unfinished gameplay footage from a canceled Iron Man game developed by Avalanche Studios in the early 2010s has surfaced online, showing early combat and flight mechanics.
Unfinished gameplay footage from a long-canceled Iron Man video game developed by Avalanche Studios, the studio behind Just Cause and Mad Max, has surfaced online. The clips, reportedly captured from a PlayStation 3 developer kit and shared on Reddit, show an extremely early build of the project that was never officially announced to the public.
The footage depicts Iron Man flying through a large environment while engaging jets and attacking various facilities. One video appears to be an unfinished E3 demo, featuring hand-to-hand combat with soldiers in a heavy, Arkham-style fighting system. The playable character also uses repulsor blasts, missiles, and other gadgets to take down targets. A standout element in the build is the semi-destructible environments, allowing Iron Man to throw enemies through walls, tear through buildings, and carve shortcuts through structures.
Avalanche Studios co-founder Christofer Sundberg confirmed in a 2022 interview that the project existed and was ultimately canceled. The game was in development during the early 2010s, a period when SEGA was publishing several Iron Man titles tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The leaked build is not far enough along to distinguish itself significantly from those games, though it shows promise given the studio's track record with open-world sandbox design.
Interest in the footage stems largely from Avalanche's reputation. The studio's Mad Max game, released in 2015, was praised for its vehicular combat and exploration, while the Just Cause series is known for its chaotic, physics-driven sandbox gameplay. Those strengths suggest the studio could have delivered a distinctive Iron Man experience had the project continued.
Despite the cancellation, there remains an active Iron Man game in development. EA Motive, the studio behind the Dead Space remake, announced in 2022 that it was working on a new Iron Man title. Details have been extremely scarce since then, with no significant updates in the years following the announcement. The project has remained in development even after EA canceled a separate Black Panther game last year, which had raised concerns that Iron Man might suffer a similar fate.
Given that four years have passed since EA Motive's announcement, fans are hoping for news on the title soon. The leaked footage offers a glimpse of what could have been, while the ongoing EA project represents the current hope for a modern Iron Man game.
