Rivian Rolls Out RivianOS 2 to First-Generation R1 Models
Rivian's 2026.31 software update brings RivianOS 2 to all R1 vehicles, including first-generation models, adding new interface features, navigation alerts, and cloud-assisted voice controls.
Rivian has begun rolling out software update 2026.31, which brings its new RivianOS 2 operating system to every R1T and R1S, including first-generation models. The update places early R1 vehicles on the same underlying software stack as the newer R2, delivering a redesigned interface, enhanced navigation alerts, and expanded voice functionality.
The most visible changes are in the layout of the center display. Rivian has introduced configurable quick controls and a media player that can be positioned on either side of the screen. A new vertical status bar and a reworked settings menu with universal search and context-sensitive controls aim to make daily use more intuitive. The update is part of Rivian's broader push to treat vehicles as software-defined platforms that improve over time.
Graphics also receive an overhaul, though hardware differences between generations lead to different implementations. Second-generation R1s and the R2 use Unreal Engine 5 for real-time 3D vehicle and surroundings visualizations. First-generation R1s remain on Unreal Engine 4, a choice Rivian says preserves responsiveness on the older display hardware. While early owners cannot gain the newer compute power, they still benefit from most of the new features.
Navigation improvements include integration of Google Maps data about police presence and speed cameras, sourced from local authorities, third-party providers, and real-time reports from Google Maps and Waze users. Connect+ subscribers gain access to a dedicated weather app with current conditions, air-quality information, and a 10-day forecast. They can also create, view, and modify active vehicle trips through the Rivian mobile app.
Underlying the update is what Rivian calls its “Unified Intelligence” platform. Second-generation R1s and R2s have enough onboard computing power for more local processing, while both generations of R1 receive expanded cloud-assisted voice functionality and refreshed driver-display layouts. Privacy controls remain intact, allowing owners to disable hotword wake-word functionality, restrict location sharing, and adjust driver-profile data settings.
The significance of this update extends beyond individual features. A first-generation R1 receiving essentially the same software design language as a brand-new R2 demonstrates the potential of over-the-air updates to keep older vehicles current. Rivian says the 2026.31 update is rolling out now to eligible R1 and R2 vehicles, though availability may vary by vehicle.
