BMW Revives X4 as All-Electric iX4 for 2027
BMW has reinvented the X4 as the all-electric iX4, built on Neue Klasse underpinnings with up to 603 hp in the M60 xDrive and a US launch starting with the 463-hp 50 xDrive.
BMW is bringing back the X4, but the coupe-SUV returns exclusively as an electric vehicle under the name iX4. The new model, part of BMW's expanding Neue Klasse lineup, takes the second-generation iX3's platform and wraps it in a dramatically sloping body, marking a full reinvention rather than a simple redesign.
The iX4 adopts the new design language with illuminated kidney grilles, slim horizontal taillights, a full-length panoramic glass roof, and strong M styling cues. BMW claims a drag coefficient of just 0.23, slightly better than the iX3's 0.24, which helps extend range. The coupe-like roofline does reduce rear cargo volume by 30 liters compared to the iX3, leaving 490 liters behind the rear seats and 1,600 liters with the 40:20:40-split seats folded. The front trunk carries over unchanged at 58 liters. BMW says rear passengers still get abundant headroom despite the swooping roof.
In Europe, the entry-level iX4 40 xDrive produces 369 horsepower and 520 Nm (383 lb-ft) of torque, paired with an 82.6-kWh usable battery and up to 638 kilometers (396 miles) of WLTP range. That is 17 km (10.5 miles) more than the equivalent iX3, thanks to the more aerodynamic shape. However, this version will not be offered in the United States at launch, though it could arrive later.
American buyers will start with the iX4 50 xDrive, which delivers 463 horsepower and 475 lb-ft (645 Nm) of torque. The US-spec model accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, while the European version takes 4.9 seconds to reach 62 mph. Both are electronically limited to 130 mph (210 km/h).
Range figures differ between markets because of testing procedures. The US iX4 50 xDrive is estimated at 428 miles (689 kilometers) on the EPA cycle, while the European WLTP combined cycle suggests up to 828 km (514 miles). BMW notes the battery pack is physically the same, with listed net capacities of 112.2 kWh in the US and 108.7 kWh in Europe, the difference stemming from regulations and warranty standards. The 50 xDrive models also post slightly better range than their iX3 counterparts due to the rakish roofline.
Charging capabilities vary by version. The US iX4 50 supports 15.4 kW AC charging as standard, while the global model comes with 11 kW and offers 22 kW as an option. DC fast charging at up to 400 kW is possible, which is 100 kW more than the 40 xDrive.
At the top of the range, the iX4 M60 xDrive packs dual motors producing a combined 603 horsepower and 645 lb-ft (875 Nm) of torque. It sprints to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). The M60 comes standard with adaptive M suspension and an electronically controlled M locking differential at the rear axle. The upgraded suspension is optional on other versions, but the differential is exclusive to the M Performance model. It also adds M Sport and M Sport Plus modes plus a Boost button. The global M60 gets the larger battery with a provisional WLTP range of up to 777 km (483 miles); EPA estimates are not yet available.
Inside, the iX4 features BMW's Panoramic iDrive, combining a 17.9-inch touchscreen with a wide windshield projection and an optional 3D head-up display. The steering wheel design carries over from other Neue Klasse models. The M60 adds massaging and electrically operated M Sport seats with illuminated M logos. Unlike the iX3, the panoramic glass roof is standard on the iX4, stretching the full length of the roof with climate comfort glazing.
Customers will be able to choose from nine colors at launch, including Eucalyptus Green, Vegas Red, and Polarized Grey, with Frozen Pure Red, Frozen Ocean Wave Blue, and Frozen Space Silver joining shortly after. BMW also plans to sell the iX4 with a standard M Sport Package in Europe and the United States, bringing 20-inch wheels and M Sport brakes from the start.
The first-ever BMW iX4 is scheduled to go on sale early next year.
