Blizzard Reveals Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, Set in a Fallen Sanctuary

Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced Diablo 5, set in a ruined Sanctuary where Diablo has already won. The reveal came during BlizzCon 2026, with the development team sharing early details on classes, world design, and itemization.

Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that Diablo 5 is in development, marking the next mainline entry in its long-running dungeon-crawler franchise. The announcement came during BlizzCon 2026, where the Diablo team took the stage to reveal that the game will launch in spring 2029 and will be set in a ruined Sanctuary where Diablo has already won.

«The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won,» said Joe Shely, a key figure on the Diablo team. «For the first time, you won't be fighting to stop Diablo from taking Sanctuary. You'll enter a world where he already has. There are no towns, no safe places waiting to protect you.»

The reveal was followed by a dedicated panel titled Forging the Next Era, where developers discussed the story, world, gameplay, and itemization. Shely explained that the team had to decide between more downloadable content for Diablo 4 or a full sequel. «Once we decided that this game was going to bring Diablo back, we knew we had to do it right,» said narrative director Jennifer Brandes Hpler. «He couldn't just be a final boss. He needs to be a boss that's shaping this game from its opening moments.»

Diablo 5 will feature a procedural world, both in dungeons and the overworld, meaning that returning to previously explored areas will present new layouts and challenges. «That idea of not knowing what's around the corner creates a lot of tension,» said senior producer Tiffany Wat. «So, in Diablo 5, we're bringing back the procedural world, both in the dungeons and the overworld.»

The panel also confirmed the return of the Demon Hunter and Monk classes, alongside a new class called the Plague Knight, which will focus on spreading disease and consuming power. Shely teased that Diablo 5 will launch with more classes than any previous entry in the series. «I don't just mean more classes than any Diablo game at ship,» he said. «I mean more classes total.»

Itemization is still early in development, but the team shared concept art and confirmed that gear-based sets and multi-slot items are returning. Shely compared the system to a city, saying, «Think about New York City; it's an enormous metropolis, you can immediately go to Times Square and immediately find something cool. That's kind of how I think about our set up.»

Additionally, a new character named Zarg, a Treasure Goblin, was teased. His name and details are not final, but he represents another way Blizzard is shaking up the formula. The game is still early in development, and more information is expected in the coming months.
