The Las Vegas Raiders are holding their breath after star running back Ashton Jeanty suffered an apparent leg injury during practice on Sunday and had to be helped off the field. The 22-year-old was unable to put any pressure on his right leg after the incident, which occurred when he dove to catch a pass during a team period. Jeanty stayed on the ground until trainers and teammates assisted him off the field.
As Jeanty remained on the ground, the indoor practice facility went silent, and the entire team knelt and prayed for their teammate. The Raiders have not yet provided a statement on Jeanty's injury, and head coach Klint Kubiak is not scheduled to speak with reporters until Tuesday.
Coming off a strong rookie season, Jeanty had not played much during the team's two preseason games. He had just three carries for 16 yards against the Arizona Cardinals in the team's first preseason game and did not play in the second preseason game against the Houston Texans.
Jeanty was drafted with the No. 6 overall pick out of Boise State last year and was productive despite playing behind a poor offensive line. In 17 games last year, Jeanty rushed for 975 yards and five touchdowns while catching 55 passes for 346 yards and five receiving touchdowns.
If Jeanty were to miss any time, the team would turn to fourth-round rookie Mike Washington Jr., Dylan Laube, undrafted rookie Roman Hemby and Dare Ogunbowale in his stead. Washington took the first-team reps in Jeanty's place following his injury, and he had already been taking some first-team reps prior to the injury due to a strong training camp.
