Chinese robotics company Unitree has unveiled what it calls the world’s first mass-produced, transformable mecha robot, marking a significant milestone in the rapidly evolving humanoid robotics industry. The GD01, standing nine feet tall and weighing half a ton, can carry a human pilot inside its torso-mounted cockpit, walk on two or four legs, and deliver punches powerful enough to knock down walls. The robot’s titanium-alloy limbs are connected by heavy-duty mechanical hinges and encased in carbon fiber, allowing smooth, deliberate movements.
Unitree founder and CEO Wang Xingxing said the inspiration for the GD01 came from an unexpected source: a UFC fight. “I thought I could make a bigger robot for boxing competitions,” Wang told TIME in his first international media interview. “Then I thought, Why not do an even bigger one that can actually carry a human inside?” He also acknowledged drawing references from the film Avatar, directed by James Cameron. Wang, a native of Ningbo, China, founded Unitree in 2016 at age 26 and has since progressed from robot dogs to humanoid robots and now to human mobility machines.
While the GD01 captures the imagination, Unitree’s more practical humanoid robots, such as the flagship G1, are expected to drive the company’s commercial success. Unitree shipped more than 5,500 units in 2025, representing over a quarter of the global humanoid robot market, making it the world leader in production volume. In June, Nvidia announced that its Jetson Thor chip would be integrated into Unitree’s H2 humanoid for sale to research institutions worldwide.
The broader humanoid robotics industry is attracting major players. Tesla announced the third generation of its Optimus humanoid robot in January, with plans to eventually produce 10 million units per year at factories in Fremont, Texas, and other locations. California-based Figure dispatched its latest 03 humanoid to BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina in late June, where its earlier 02 model helped assemble 30,000 cars last year. Oregon-based Agility Robotics has secured deployments at Toyota and Latin American e-commerce giant Mercado Libre.
Morgan Stanley forecasts that as many as 13 million humanoids could be in use by 2035, equivalent to the population of Bolivia, with that number rising to 1 billion by 2050, when the industry could be worth $5 trillion. Wang estimates that a “ChatGPT moment” for humanoids — when a robot can execute 80% of voice commands in 80% unfamiliar environments — is two to ten years away. “Once the technology surpasses this inflection point, robots can gradually be rolled out for large-scale commercial use,” he said.
The potential impact of widespread humanoid adoption is profound. Nonunion robots could operate around the clock on assembly lines, assist in hospitals, and perform agricultural labor. Proponents envision an era of global abundance, automating mundane and dangerous work. However, critics warn of mass labor displacement, wealth concentration, and an identity crisis as robots dominate manual and service industries. Governments may face strained social safety nets and increased competition between the U.S. and China over raw materials and technology.
Geopolitical tensions are already surfacing. On June 3, three U.S. lawmakers introduced the bipartisan Guard Act, which seeks to ban Chinese robots deemed a national security threat. The bill specifically targets Unitree, with co-sponsor John Moolenaar, chairman of the House Select Committee on China, accusing the company of benefiting from “generous state subsidies” and threatening to bankrupt American competitors. Elon Musk has also commented on China’s dominance in the field, stating, “We don’t see any significant competitors outside of China.”
Cybersecurity concerns add another layer of complexity. While large language models can hallucinate or suggest harmful actions, a hacked humanoid robot could physically enact threats, moving online dangers into homes, streets, and factories. Wang remains optimistic, predicting that within ten years, every household may have a small robot capable of doing laundry, grilling steak, and providing basic care. “They can also take on tasks most humans would rather avoid, from steep mountain farming to sewer maintenance,” he said.
As the humanoid robotics race accelerates, the tension between utopian and dystopian visions becomes sharper. Whether Unitree’s GD01 and its competitors resemble the faithful C-3PO or Frankenstein’s monster remains to be seen, but the technology is advancing faster than society may be prepared to manage.
