Marvel's Wolverine Adds Game Speed Control for Cinematic Slow Motion

Insomniac Games has included an accessibility option in Marvel's Wolverine that lets players slow the game to as little as 30% speed, enabling cinematic slow-motion combat and stylish gameplay footage.

Marvel's Wolverine gives players direct control over the speed of the game, allowing them to create hyper-cinematic slow-motion action sequences at the push of a button. The option is part of an expansive accessibility menu built by Insomniac Games, and it can be mapped to any button on the controller, letting players toggle between normal speed and a secondary speed of their choosing.

One player demonstrated the feature by mapping game speed to the left directional pad and slowing the action to 30%, producing a dramatic slow-motion effect. In a social media post, the player described the result as feeling like a movie, highlighting how the option transforms ordinary combat into a stylized, cinematic presentation. The feature allows a splash of blood to wash slowly across the screen or lets Wolverine drive his claws into an enemy before the player ramps the speed back up to normal.

The mechanic is reminiscent of the work of director Zack Snyder, whose action films are known for slow-motion shots that linger on violence and movement. Insomniac's previous superhero title, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, also included the same game speed option. In that game, players used it to capture elegant web-swinging sequences, briefly slowing time to emphasize a graceful animation or a striking camera angle. The feature has become a tool for creators who want full control over their gameplay footage.

Marvel's Wolverine is officially available now, arriving after an extensive five-year wait. The game launched to a mixed critical reception. In its review, IGN awarded the title a 6 out of 10, noting that the game has strong foundations but lacks enough variety to sustain itself over its full length. The review stated that the slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before the conclusion, and that even strong character work cannot lift the experience beyond merely okay.

Insomniac Games has said it is listening to player feedback and intends to keep refining the experience after launch. Liam McIntyre, the actor who portrays Wolverine, has brushed off some of the harsher comments directed at the game. He noted that he has experienced backlash before and said he is proud of what the team created.

The game speed option reflects a broader trend in modern game design, where accessibility menus and creative tools overlap. By letting players adjust the pace of combat, Insomniac gives them a way to shape how action is presented on screen, whether for practical accessibility reasons or for producing shareable, cinematic moments. For a character defined by brutal, fast-paced melee combat, the ability to slow things down offers a different way to experience the violence and choreography at the heart of the game.
