Nine unidentified fingerprints from OJ Simpson murder scene still unmatched after three decades

Nine fingerprints found at the 1994 Bundy Drive crime scene have never been matched to Simpson, his former wife or any known person, and a new Peacock docuseries argues they deserve retesting with modern forensic tools.

Nine fingerprints recovered from the 1994 crime scene on Bundy Drive in Los Angeles have never been identified, and a new Peacock docuseries argues they could still point investigators toward answers more than 30 years later. The prints were never matched to O.J. Simpson, to his former wife Nicole Brown Simpson, or to any of the 58 known individuals compared against them.

The question is the focus of "OJ's Accomplice," a docuseries co-directed by Ari Mark that explores the theory that someone else may have been involved in the killings. The series centers on Joey Ippolito, a figure in the case whose role has long been debated. According to the notes from the reporting, the prints were also absent from state and federal databases at the time, and a fingerprint witness, Gilbert Aguilar, testified in court that they remained unmatched.

The defense argued during the criminal trial that unknown attackers may have been responsible, and the docuseries contends that detectives failed to pursue that possibility seriously. Mark says the production team asked the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office to reexamine the prints, and that the office did not respond. Mark has urged that the prints be retested using modern forensic methods and checked against expanded databases that did not exist in 1994.

The Los Angeles Police Department has said the case remains open but has not released any new information. It is unclear from the available reporting whether the prints have been reexamined with current technology. The documentary's push for retesting centers on that gap: the prints remain on record, but whether they have ever been run through today's systems has not been publicly confirmed.

The docuseries also revisits claims made by Sam Ippolito, Joey Ippolito's brother. Sam has alleged that his brother returned home carrying a bag and with blood-stained hands on the night of the killings. His credibility has been questioned, and reporting on the case notes that he sought payment for his account and later tried to retract parts of it. Those issues have long complicated efforts to test the accomplice theory.

Joey Ippolito later became a federal informant in 1995 and died in 2006. Simpson was acquitted of criminal charges in 1995 but was found liable in a civil trial in 1997. He died in April 2024 at the age of 76. The nine fingerprints remain one of the case's enduring unresolved elements, and the new series is renewing calls for scientific scrutiny of evidence that has been sitting unidentified since the 1990s.
