US Embassy in Moscow warns of possible mass-casualty attack at Tsaritsyno park
The US Embassy in Moscow has warned Americans of a credible threat of an attack that could cause mass casualties at the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve, prompting comparisons to the deadly 2024 Crocus City Hall attack.
The U.S. Embassy in Moscow has warned of a credible threat of an incident that could cause mass casualties at Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve, a popular park in the southern part of the Russian capital. The alert, posted on X on Saturday, October 31, is unusually specific in its timing and location, and it has drawn immediate attention from security analysts and journalists who follow Russia closely.
In the message, the embassy said it had « learned of a credible threat of an incident that could result in mass casualties TODAY » on the grounds of the estate. It added that the U.S. government « is coordinating response measures with the relevant authorities of the Russian Federation. » American citizens were told to avoid the park on Saturday, stay away from large crowds, keep their phones charged and carry identification at all times.
The embassy did not say who was behind the threat or what kind of attack it expected. As of publication, there were no reports of an attack at the site.
Tsaritsyno is a sprawling former royal estate that draws large crowds, which is one reason the warning has resonated. Observers have compared the alert to the March 2024 attack on Crocus City Hall, a concert venue outside Moscow, where gunmen linked to the Islamic State killed more than 140 people. The U.S. Embassy had publicly warned in the weeks before that assault that extremists were planning to target large gatherings in Moscow.
ABC News international correspondent Patrick Reevell said on social media that he could not recall a specific alert of this kind since the period before the Crocus City attack, calling the warning « unusual. » Sarah Adams, a former CIA targeting officer and author of « Benghazi: Know Thy Enemy, » shared the notice with a brief remark that such warnings are not common.
The alert also carried a diplomatic dimension. Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund and a Kremlin envoy who has taken part in talks with the Trump administration, presented the warning as a sign of improving relations. Writing on social media, Dmitriev said that « in a spirit of goodwill, the US has informed Russian security services and issued a public alert about a possible terrorist attack in Tsaritsyno Park in Moscow, » and that « US-Russia security services cooperation is vital for global security. »
