A male passenger aboard the Carnival Panorama jumped overboard while the cruise ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, back to Long Beach, California, according to Carnival Cruise Line. The incident occurred as the vessel was completing the final full day of a week-long voyage that had departed Long Beach on September 13.
A Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson confirmed the overboard incident on Saturday, saying the ship's team initiated search and investigation procedures as soon as the missing guest was reported. Those procedures included reviewing closed-circuit television footage and notifying both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Mexican Coast Guard. The cruise line said it is providing support to the family members who were traveling with the guest.
«Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,» the spokesperson said in a statement.
According to an account from a passenger who said they were aboard the sailing, announcements about a missing guest began at around 11 a.m. Saturday. The Carnival Panorama had left its last port of call, Puerto Vallarta, at 8 p.m. Thursday. The call for the missing guest was repeated several times over the following hours. At about 3 p.m., the ship reportedly turned around. A subsequent announcement at approximately 3:30 p.m. informed guests that a shipwide search would be conducted, and all passengers were instructed to return to their staterooms.
As part of the standard search procedure, security personnel visited each stateroom to scan guests' ship identification cards. An hour later, another announcement indicated the search was continuing and directed guests to remain in their staterooms. At around 5 p.m., the captain and cruise director confirmed that the guest had gone overboard after reviewing onboard camera footage. They added that local authorities would continue the search and rescue operation, and guests were no longer required to stay in their staterooms.
The family and traveling companions of the missing guest were notified of his disappearance and were offered support from the ship's care team. Shortly after 7 p.m., guests were told that the ship was expected to arrive in Long Beach at 9 a.m.
The incident remains under investigation, and authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the jump. The U.S. and Mexican Coast Guards are continuing search efforts, though the outcome of those efforts has not been publicly confirmed. Carnival Cruise Line has not provided additional information about the guest's identity or the events leading up to the overboard incident.
