Bethesda has confirmed that the next Elder Scrolls game will be titled The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, revealed during a 40th-anniversary video that offered few other details about the long-awaited sequel.

Bethesda has officially confirmed the subtitle of its next major role-playing game, which will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The name was revealed in a video celebrating the studio's 40th anniversary, and it came with a logo and a title card displayed in the classic Elder Scrolls font. Beyond the name, the company shared almost nothing else about the game, leaving fans with more questions than answers about a project first announced in 2018.

The confirmation followed a report that had already pointed toward the same title. Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma received a demo of The Elder Scrolls VI earlier this summer and teased the subtitle in a post by replacing it with eight asterisks. Sentinel has eight letters, and the placeholder matched. The reveal arrived in a nearly 10-minute video in which longtime franchise director Todd Howard framed the moment as the «lperfect time» to name the game, according to the studio's messaging.

The only hint of the game's content came in a quotation attributed to Yazar, Moth Priest of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell in 4E 206. The passage reads: «The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.» Two details stand out. The quote refers to a scroll, and it names Hammerfell, a province of Tamriel, the fictional continent where the series is set. A recent report from The Verge had said the game would be set in Hammerfell and would focus on the history of the titular Elder Scrolls and the discovery of their secrets. Bethesda has not confirmed that report.

Sentinel is itself a city within Hammerfell, sitting on the northwest coast beside Iliac Bay. Hammerfell lies due west of Cyrodiil, the setting of Oblivion, and southwest of Skyrim. Its northern border is shared with the province of High Rock, and its western edge meets the Abacean Sea. Bethesda also noted in the video that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim remains «still Bethesda Game Studios’ most played game,» a figure that refers to total lifetime players.

The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced in 2018, and the studio has shared little about it since its debut trailer. Earlier this year, it was disclosed that most of Bethesda Game Studios' staff were working on the project, and Howard said, «We know we need to get it right and it’s been a long time.» Skyrim, the last core entry in the series, arrived in 2011, which will make the gap to the new release more than 15 years. No release date or platforms have been announced.

The timing comes as Xbox, Bethesda's parent company, faces renewed pressure to turn its business around. Part of that effort involves concentrating on its biggest franchises, and Fallout 5 is also in development. Bethesda developers have reportedly expressed fears of further layoffs. Whether The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel will eventually reach PlayStation consoles remains unclear, as Sharma's renewed focus on console exclusives raises that question. For now, fans have a name, a logo and a single quotation to work from while they wait for a proper reveal.
