Carnival stickers flag passengers who prepaid tips, drawing backlash
Carnival Cruise Line is testing stickers and in-stateroom notes that identify guests who prepaid their gratuities, prompting mixed reactions from passengers online.
Carnival Cruise Line is facing both criticism and praise over a new pilot program that places stickers on guests' cruise cards to identify those who have prepaid their gratuities. The move has sparked a debate among passengers about privacy, fairness and how tipping should be recognized on board.
The program came to wider attention on Oct. 28, when a TikTok user posted a video showing a sticker on her Carnival cruise card during a recent sailing aboard the Carnival Panorama. The sticker read, "Crew love, I pre-paid my gratuities." The passenger also showed a note left in her stateroom thanking her for prepaying. The note said, "Your support is greatly appreciated and helps recognize the many team members who work together to make your cruise vacation fun, memorable and enjoyable," and added, "Thank you for choosing Carnival, and we trust that you're having a wonderful cruise filled with fun, relaxation and unforgettable moments!"
Carnival told Fox News Digital in a shared statement that the gratuity program is a way for guests to recognize hardworking team members and to ensure that tips are shared among both guest-facing and behind-the-scenes crew. "Our team members provide great service to every guest," the company said. It described the stickers and thank-you notes as a way to let crew know a guest has prepaid, while giving those guests recognition for their generosity. The company added, "This is one component of a broader pilot, and we're listening to feedback as we evaluate it."
Reaction on TikTok was divided. Some users questioned whether passengers should have to publicly display how they tip. One commenter wrote, "I prepay my gratuities, but I feel it's my business, not everyone else's. I don't like this at all," adding that people "shouldn't be shamed if they can't afford to prepay." Another said the stickers were off-putting because cash tips go directly to servers and stewards, and a third asked for a sticker that also recognized cash tips given on top of prepaid gratuities.
Others welcomed the idea. One user said they always prepay and tip extra, estimating they spend about $250 to $300 more on tipping, while another said they had noticed better service when tipping upfront. A Reddit discussion also turned critical, with one user calling the approach "so incredibly tacky" and suggesting the sticker appears not only as a card sticker but as a screen in the app, meaning servers and others may see it. Another Reddit user asked why the practice needed to be public.
The reaction comes amid a broader series of disputes over cruise costs. Earlier this year, Fox News Digital reported that passengers were growing frustrated as several major cruise lines raised daily gratuities and added service charges. Passengers also pushed back against Carnival's plans to introduce dynamic pricing for drink and Wi-Fi packages.
