Xbox Keeps Its Promise of 75 Day-One Game Pass Ultimate Releases

Xbox has fulfilled its October 2025 commitment to deliver more than 75 day-one games to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers within a year, despite a turbulent period marked by leadership changes, layoffs, and strategic pivots.

Xbox has fulfilled a major promise made to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers during one of the most turbulent years in the company's history. In October 2025, following a price increase for the subscription tier, Xbox pledged that Ultimate members would receive access to more than 75 day-one game releases annually. As of the launch of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy on August 27, 2026, that commitment has been met, according to a year-long tracking of every title added to the service on its release day.

The achievement comes against a backdrop of significant upheaval at the Microsoft gaming division. Over the past year, Xbox hired a new CEO, laid off thousands of developers, spun off several studios, and scaled back its multiplatform ambitions. Phil Spencer, who had led the division since 2014, stepped down as CEO of Microsoft Gaming in February 2026 and was replaced by Asha Sharma. Sarah Bond, an executive closely tied to Xbox's multiplatform strategy, also left the company at that time.

Sharma signaled a shift in direction immediately, writing in a Microsoft blog post that she wanted to "recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years." She later announced Project Helix, Xbox's next-generation console, and sunset the controversial "This is an Xbox" marketing campaign that had deemphasized consoles. In an April 2026 meeting reported by The Verge, Sharma told employees they "have to fix the fundamentals on console and PC."

The day-one release count was met through a mix of first-party blockbusters and independent titles. October 2025 was the busiest month for first-party and second-party releases, with Keeper, Ninja Gaiden 4, and The Outer Worlds 2 all published by Xbox Game Studios. November 2025 saw the most day-one additions overall, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the second Call of Duty game to launch directly into the subscription service. However, the game received mixed reviews and underperformed in North America, according to Circana sales data, leading Activision to announce it would no longer release Modern Warfare or Black Ops titles in consecutive years.

Other notable day-one additions over the year included Forza Horizon 6, Subnautica 2, Hades 2, and Kiln, the last game released by Double Fine under Xbox ownership. January 2026 was the quietest month with only two additions, while December 2025 added three games, including Marvel Cosmic Invasion and Routine. The year also saw the release of the Xbox ROG Ally, a portable PC positioned as tailor-made for Game Pass, though the October price hike drew criticism from fans and former Xbox developers.

Despite the fulfillment of the day-one promise, the broader strategy at Xbox remains in flux. The company has pivoted away from its earlier multiplatform push, spun off studios, and is preparing for a next-generation console launch amid component shortages. The commitment to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, however, has held steady through the transition, offering a measure of continuity for the service's most dedicated users.
