Man Fatally Shot Inside Midtown Manhattan Subway Station, NYPD Says
A man was shot and killed at the 53rd Street and 7th Avenue station in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon. Police said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, while witnesses described a chaotic scene as passengers fled.
A man was shot and killed inside a busy Midtown Manhattan subway station on Saturday afternoon, according to the New York City Police Department. The shooting occurred just after noon at the 53rd Street and 7th Avenue station, a major transit hub that serves several subway lines in the heart of the city.
Witnesses described a sudden and chaotic scene as gunfire erupted on the platform. Hassen Pinchback, a visitor from Orlando, Florida, said he heard the shots as the train doors opened. «When the train doors opened, that’s when you heard pop pop pop,» Pinchback said. He described the aftermath as «like a stampede» as passengers ran for safety.
Pinchback said a female bystander was performing chest compressions on the victim before emergency responders arrived, telling him to «hang in there.» Another witness, who identified herself only by the last name Miller and said she was visiting from Washington state, was sitting inside a subway car with her daughter when they heard about five shots. She said her daughter stepped outside and the shooter looked directly at her before continuing to fire.
«I just started praying. I’m a very strong Christian,» Miller said. «Jesus saved us. 100%.» She said her daughter was able to signal a conductor on another train that there was a shooter, and the conductor called 911.
The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries, police said. The NYPD told Fox News Digital that no arrests have been made and that the investigation is ongoing. PIX11 reported that the shooting stemmed from an argument between the shooter and the victim.
The station at 53rd Street and 7th Avenue is one of the busiest in the system, serving the E and M lines and sitting near major office towers, tourist destinations and transit connections. The shooting occurred in the early afternoon on a Saturday, a time when the area typically sees heavy foot traffic from residents, workers and visitors.
The killing adds to concerns about safety in the nation’s largest subway system, which carries millions of riders each week. Transit officials have repeatedly pointed to overall crime trends while acknowledging that high-profile incidents can heighten anxiety among riders. The circumstances of Saturday’s shooting, including what prompted the argument, remain under investigation.
Police have not released the name of the victim or a description of the shooter. Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD. The department said additional details would be released as the investigation progresses.
