El Niño Snow Map Shows Where Winter Odds May Shift

A very strong El Niño is increasingly likely for 2026–27. NOAA’s historical snowfall map points to regional tendencies, but it is not a promise of snow for any specific city.

A NOAA snowfall map is drawing attention as the United States heads toward what could be an exceptionally strong El Niño winter. The map is useful, but only if it is read for what it actually is: a record of historical tendencies, not a precise forecast of where snow will pile up this season.

The Climate Prediction Center said in August that El Niño is strengthening and has a greater than 90% chance of becoming very strong during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter of 2026–27. NOAA also estimated a 69% chance that the October-through-December period reaches an exceptionally strong threshold using the Relative Oceanic Niño Index.

That strength matters because El Niño can shift the jet stream and change where storms travel across North America. NOAA’s historical analysis shows a tendency for above-average snowfall across portions of the southern United States, especially in colder, high-elevation areas of the West. In contrast, lower snowfall has been more common around the Great Lakes, interior New England, the northern Rockies, the Pacific Northwest, western Canada and much of Alaska.

The pattern can sound counterintuitive. El Niño is often described in terms of wetter or drier weather, but snowfall requires both moisture and sufficiently cold air. A place can receive more winter precipitation and still get less snow if temperatures favor rain. Mountain elevations can move in the opposite direction because they remain cold enough to turn added moisture into heavy snow.

That is why residents should resist turning the broad map into a local snow-total prediction. Historical composites average many winters together. Individual El Niño seasons can depart sharply from the average, and a single storm can be controlled by atmospheric conditions that seasonal climate patterns cannot resolve months ahead.

For practical planning, the map is best treated as one layer of information. It can help skiers, water managers, transportation agencies and households understand which regions have historically leaned snowier or less snowy under similar Pacific conditions. But local winter preparation still depends on regional forecasts and, eventually, short-range storm guidance.

The unusual strength of the Pacific warming makes the coming winter scientifically significant. What it does not do is eliminate weather’s ability to break the pattern. The map shifts the odds; it does not write the snowfall total in advance.
