Hogwarts Legacy Is Officially Becoming a Series

Warner Bros. Discovery has put a second Hogwarts Legacy directly into its current games pipeline. The sequel is confirmed, while its release date, platforms and story remain unannounced.

Warner Bros. Discovery has moved the next Hogwarts Legacy out of the realm of obvious expectation and into a formal corporate pipeline. In its second-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, WBD says its games slate is expanding and specifically includes “the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.”

The sentence is brief, but its placement matters. WBD is explaining how Games fits into the future of its Studios segment, calling the business an important growth lever and saying it expects games to make a more meaningful contribution to profitability. The sequel is therefore not presented as a casual franchise extension; it sits inside management’s current operating plan.

What the document does not provide is almost everything players normally expect from a reveal. There is no release date, platform list, final title, story premise, gameplay description or footage. WBD confirms the project’s place in the pipeline without turning the shareholder letter into a consumer launch.

The original game gives the company a strong reason to continue. Warner Bros. Games announced in December 2025 that Hogwarts Legacy had sold more than 40 million units worldwide and described it as the biggest video game release in the publisher’s history. That scale turns a sequel into one of the most commercially obvious projects in Warner’s portfolio.

Developed by Avalanche Software and published under the Portkey Games label, Hogwarts Legacy avoided retelling Harry Potter’s central story. It placed players in the Wizarding World of the 1800s, where they entered Hogwarts as a fifth-year student, learned spells, explored the castle and built an adventure around a new character and a different historical moment.

The game first launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in February 2023. Versions for older PlayStation and Xbox hardware and Nintendo Switch followed, with a Nintendo Switch 2 edition arriving later. That staggered expansion helped the title keep finding new audiences long after launch week.

A sequel had already been discussed publicly before the 2026 letter. In 2024, then-Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad told Variety that the games team was working on a Hogwarts Legacy sequel and that it was a major priority. He also said some high-level storytelling elements were being coordinated with the Harry Potter television series for HBO.

That does not mean the sequel will adapt the television show. The first Hogwarts Legacy takes place roughly a century before Harry Potter’s school years. The more useful reading is that Warner Bros. wants its various Wizarding World projects to coexist without contradicting one another at the level of franchise architecture.

The corporate backdrop has also changed. Warner Bros. Games closed three studios and canceled Wonder Woman in 2025 while saying it would focus development and investment around Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones. WBD now describes its approach as disciplined investment behind fewer, higher-conviction titles.

That makes the second Hogwarts Legacy a test of whether a massive first hit can become a durable series. Fans will judge the next game on whether it finds a new sense of discovery after the original already delivered the fantasy of exploring Hogwarts. Warner Bros. will judge it on something just as demanding: whether 40 million sales can become repeatable franchise economics.
