Gordon Ramsay Reveals Why He Really Cried at Daughter Holly's Wedding

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay says his tears while walking daughter Holly down the aisle were not only about giving her away — the flower bill also played a role. He also opened up about becoming 'second best' in his daughters' lives and preparing for another wedding next year.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is opening up about the emotions that overwhelmed him while walking his eldest daughter, Holly Ramsay, down the aisle — and the real reason behind his tears was not what most guests assumed.

Holly, 26, married Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty, 31, on Dec. 27, 2025, at The Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Bath, England. The couple announced their engagement in 2024. During a recent interview, Ramsay recalled the moment he escorted his daughter into the church and admitted he was struck by more than fatherly sentiment.

«I was like a sack of custard walking down that line into that church. 60 meters!» he said. «And I was looking at all these flowers overlooking the pews and thinking, this is expensive! Everyone thought I was crying because I was giving her away. I was more crying with the cost of the flower bill, and where are they going tomorrow? We're paying all this money for 90 minutes, these flowers.»

The 59-year-old chef, who shares six children with his wife, Tana Ramsay, said his tears stopped once he learned the flowers could be donated to a local hospital. «We got the flowers donated to the local hospital and that stopped me crying,» he said. «And then I handed her over, and I celebrated like no tomorrow, because that daughter was expensive.»

Beyond the wedding-day humor, Ramsay reflected on the deeper emotional shift that comes with a daughter's marriage. He described the close bonds he built with his three daughters over the years, recalling advice he gave them from an early age about honesty and trust. «You grow up with these gorgeous girls and you teach them,» he said. «The earlier you tell me, the more I can do.»

That approach, he said, eventually turned him into a trusted confidant. «Then you're like that, you're sort of the BFF, right? Then you're a cool dad, then you're perfect. But when you walk them down the aisle, and you're minutes away from not being the number one guy in their life, and you're handing them over, man, that hits. That absolutely hits.»

Ramsay acknowledged that the father-daughter relationship is «borrowed time» before another partner enters the picture. «So you have to understand that relationship with your daughter is borrowed time before there's another man in their lives. Another partner in their life, that you become second best.»

As a father of six — Holly and her twin brother Jack, daughters Megan, 28, and Matilda, 24, and sons Oscar, 7, and Jesse, 2 — Ramsay noted he will face similar moments again. «I have ages to go through all that,» he said. «Three boys and three girls.»

Holly's wedding was the first of his children to walk down the aisle, but another is already on the horizon. Ramsay revealed during an August appearance on «Live with Kelly and Mark» that Megan is engaged. «I've got to get my dance act together, especially with another wedding coming up next year,» he said.

Holly wore three different dresses on her wedding day, including her mother's gown from her 1996 nuptials with Ramsay. The chef told People that seeing Holly in Tana's wedding dress came as «a bit of a shock.» Holly told British Vogue that wearing the gown during her father-daughter dance was especially meaningful because «the last time Dad saw this dress was when he danced with my mom at their wedding.»

Ramsay also admitted he was nervous about his father-of-the-bride speech. «It's tough, honestly — I mean, being a dad with three daughters, you dream of that moment. That moment arrives, and you're just like a hot mess,» he said. «The speech was perfect. It went well. You got to find that sort of — you've got to be warm, emotional... It was just a tough gig.»

His daughter Tilly said Ramsay spent about an hour rehearsing the speech in front of her on Christmas Eve, poring over every word. Ultimately, «no tweaks were needed,» she said. «It was perfect. It made everybody cry.»

Ramsay, who is starring in season two of Apple TV's «Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars,» continues to balance his public career with family milestones. The documentary series, which he executive produces, debuted in October 2025 and follows chefs around the world as they pursue Michelin stars while managing personal and professional sacrifices.
