Avatar: Seven Havens Explores the Mystery of a World Without Modern Technology
The new Avatar series reveals a post-apocalyptic world where radio and rudimentary generators are the most advanced technology left, raising questions about what happened to the industrial revolution of Korra's era.
The world of Avatar: Seven Havens is a far cry from the bustling, industrialized Republic City seen in The Legend of Korra. Six episodes into the new series, viewers have been given only fleeting glimpses of technology, and what they have seen suggests a dramatic regression. The show, which continues the Avatar franchise, has finally begun to hint at what happened to the modern technology that once defined Korra's era.
In the first few episodes of Seven Havens, there is a noticeable absence of any machinery or advanced devices. The first real clue arrives in Episode 5, when characters Pavi and Nisha discover an old radio in Karthik's office. The radio appears to still function, receiving a transmission that is presumably from members of the Order of the White Lotus in other Havens. When Chancellor Kayoko finds the radio, she accuses Karthik of contacting the other Havens. He dismisses it as a «broken relic from the old world.»
However, the end of Episode 6 reveals that Chancellor Kayoko herself uses a much more elaborate radio setup to call on the other Havens for help. While Karthik's radio is a covert relic, the Havens have clearly retained basic broadcast systems to stay in touch. This fits the post-apocalyptic tone of the series, as radio signals rely on lower frequencies and minimal power to send messages across long distances. The fact that Kayoko's radio station is hidden in a concealed tower room further confirms that this technology is meant to be used sparingly.
Another significant clue about the state of technology comes from Episode 6, when the benders, who appear to be afflicted by a strange red energy, encounter what seems to be a generator room. On the way there, they pass a series of flickering lights, indicating that the base is powered by something more than firelight. The generator room itself appears to be low-tech, reminiscent of the advanced airships seen during Avatar Aang's time. This suggests that while some form of technology powers Ellora, it is far less advanced than what one would expect from a society that should have continued to industrialize.
So what could have caused this technological collapse? The most likely explanation ties back to the events after Korra left the spirit portals open. Giant spirit vines emerged into the physical world, and humans began using them as a power source. This created a dangerous combination of technology and spirit energy that no one was prepared for. In The Legend of Korra, Kuvira harnessed tree roots to power a nuclear-level energy cannon mounted on a giant mech suit. Only Korra's spiritbending was able to redirect the blast and prevent mass destruction.
At the end of The Legend of Korra, spirit vine energy remained a contentious issue. Korra made it clear she opposed further research, and the president of Republic City backed her. But it seems that was not the end of it. Although Seven Havens has not yet revealed the cause of the cataclysm, it appears likely that spirit vine technology was at the heart of it.
The prevailing theory among fans is that the use of spirit vine energy got out of hand. Like any natural resource, abusing it would destabilize the balance between the spirit world and the physical world. The cataclysm could very well have been the spirit world forcibly rebalancing things by destroying humanity and its technology. This theory explains why the only gadgets seen in Seven Havens are low-tech and why the Chancellor is so careful about using the radio. It would also explain why the mysterious red energy appears to be some sort of electricity-spirit energy hybrid that only the Avatars can handle.
While this theory seems to fit the evidence, it remains just a theory. With the series already renewed through a fourth season, it is unlikely all the mysteries will be solved in Season 1. For now, viewers can continue to speculate about what happened to the world Korra left behind.
